    For Windows MSN Messenger and Windows Live Messenger "Error 80048820" is a common problem. In the following sentences I will describe few methods to settle this error.
    The message: "Sorry, we were unable to sign you in to the MSN Messenger at this time. Please try again later. To let us try and troubleshoot the problem, click the Troubleshoot button." and the error code 80048820 can be displayed on your PC's screen when you start MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger application and try to login.

    What can cause this Error?

    The 80048820 Error can be displayed if:

   1.The clock of your system is incorrectly set.
   2.The file "softpub.dll" is incorrectly registered on your system.
   3.The proxy server is wrong configured on Internet Explorer.

    How to resolve this error?

    Follow next steps to resolve the error:

First step: Verify your computer's clock settings. If necessary set it correctly:

1.  Close your Hotmail Messenger application.
2.  Double-click the clock that is displayed in the bottom right corner of your screen. (In Vista click once, and select "Change date and time settings...")
3.  On the Date and Time Properties box, click and open the Internet Time tab.
4.  Checkmark Automatically synchronize with an internet time server.
5.   Type time.windows.com in the Time Server address box.
6.  Then update your's system clock clicking the Update Now button.
7.   Wait a while until the system finishes synchronizing, and click OK to close the dialog box.
8.  Start the Hotmail MSN or Windows Live Messenger application again and try to sign-in.
   

    If this doesn't resolve the error, follow to the next step:

Second Step: Re register the softpub.dll file on your system's registry:

1. Open START menu, on the left-bottom of your task bar, and click Run. (in Vista, START/ All programs/ Accessories / Run)
2. In the box, write "regsvr32 softpub.dl"(without the quotes) and click Enter.
3. Start your Messenger application again and try to login.
   

    Even doing this operation the 80048820 error message will show again proceed to the next step:

Third step: Delete proxy server settings from your Internet Explorer following the next steps:

1. Open your Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu and select Internet Options.
2. In the dialog box, open the Connections tab.
3. Click the LAN settings.
4. Delete the text in the following check box and then click OK, and OK again to exit the Internet Options.
5. Start the Hotmail MSN or Windows Live Messenger and login.

TIP: If you are using a router change the MTU value between 1400 and 1500 to resolve the error.
